Special Olympics Wednesday, May 23 at Little Elm ISD Athletic Complex
More than 240 athletes representing teams from several Dallas-Fort Worth school systems will take the field on Wednesday, May 23 for the Sixth LEISD Special Olympic Track Meet at the LEISD Athletic Complex, 1151 East Eldorado Parkway.
The games will begin with an Olympic Torch run through town at 9:30 a.m. by student volunteers and the Little Elm Police Department. The opening ceremonies will begin promptly at 10 a.m.
The atmosphere at the complex will be filled with excitement. Students, more than 3,000 in number, representing several LEISD elementary schools will be on hand with signs and streamers cheering for all athletes in their respected events.
“Little Elm ISD is thrilled to be able to host this event and provide the opportunity for students, faculty and the community to be involved. Special Olympics is such a rewarding experience for the participants, and even more so for the volunteers who are able to assist these special athletes for the day. I am looking forward to our sixth Special Olympics track meet,” said Cortney Clover, director of special populations.
Students from Little Elm High School will be partnered with each athlete as their “buddy” for the day, helping to run events and award ribbons to winners.
Local business leaders including school board members, school administrators and city officials are volunteering as event timers, starters, measurers, etc. to run the individual events.
